Falling for Wrocław: Dwarfs, Food Cravings, and a City with Soul

Solo Travel Guide • Nov 2024 & Dec 2025

Wroclaw: Dwarfs, Gothic Spires & Hidden Gems

Finding the magic (and the best Asian food) in Poland's most colorful city.

"I fell in love with this charming town instantly. From the calm hues of the Market Square to the nearly 1,000 gnomes hiding in the streets. I visited twice—once for the sightseeing, and once just for the Korean BBQ. Here is my complete list of things to do."
🏰 Arrival: The Yellow Castle I have to mention the arrival experience. Wrocław Główny isn't just a train station; it looks like a yellow castle straight out of a Disney movie. Don't rush out—take a moment to admire the architecture inside and out. It’s one of the most beautiful stations in Poland.
1 The Colorful Market Square

I would say this is the prettiest Old Town market square I’ve ever seen in Poland. The colorful buildings mix Gothic structures with Renaissance elements. The locals said it took years to restore after WWII, and the result looks like a fairy wonderland.

💡 Why visit? For Asian travelers, this architecture is completely unique. It feels different and new. Just wander around and soak in the colors.
🎄 Christmas Market Since I visited in winter, the Market Square was transformed into a massive Christmas Market. It’s widely considered the best in Poland, full of lights, mulled wine (Grzaniec), and cozy vibes. If you visit in December, prepare for crowds but a magical atmosphere.

2 Hunting Games: The City of Gnomes

Why has this Polish city been invaded by dwarfs? There's a story behind it.

It started in the 1980s with the Orange Alternative, a student movement using humor to mock the authoritarian regime. They painted dwarfs over censored graffiti. Today, these statues honor that resistance and have become a beloved city-wide scavenger hunt.

There are nearly 1,000 of them! Keep your eyes on the ground.

3 The Foodie Detour: Asian Comfort Food

If you've never tried Polish cuisine, definitely try it first. But as an exchange student, sometimes I just crave the taste of home. Surprisingly, Wroclaw has amazing Asian restaurants.

Korean BBQ Galbi restauracja koreańska & grill

My friend and I took a 6-hour train trip round-trip just for this. Totally crazy, but totally worth it.

  • Cost: ~96 zł per person (Unlimited sides, kimchi jjigae, drinks).
  • The Rule: You must order two portions of the same meat for the grill (a bit weird, but the food makes up for it).
  • Verdict: Great food, fresh, helpful staff. A bit far from the center, but perfect for hanging out with friends.
Malatang Pan Pot Mala (Real Chinese Flavor)

If you are a spice lover, go here! This is self-service (build-your-own bowl) with ingredients like shrimp, squid, mushrooms, and noodles. Payment is by weight.

💰 70-100 zł/portion

Boba DingTea Wroclaw

Studying in Europe makes you crave bubble tea. This place is run by friendly Vietnamese staff with ingredients imported from Taiwan. The Brown Sugar flavor is the best.

🌉 The Witches Bridge (Penitents' Bridge)

Climb 247 steps for a great view. The legend says the shadows on the bridge are the souls of girls who preferred partying over housework!

🎫 15 zł Admission
"Look closely at the railing — can you spot the tiny witches?" 🧙‍♀️
⛪ Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island)

The "Gem of Wroclaw" This is where the city began. It’s incredibly peaceful and filled with religious buildings.

  • Most Piaskowy (Sand Bridge): The oldest bridge (1861).
  • Most Tumski (Tumski Bridge): The famous "Lovers Bridge" with padlocks (though many were removed recently!).
  • The Lamplighter: At dusk, look for the man lighting the gas lamps by hand (we missed him, but maybe you will see him!).
  • Botanical Gardens: A peaceful escape nearby.

5 One Last Sweet Treat
🍦 Polish Lody

Located at Plac Bema 3. Definitely worth a visit for 100% handmade ice cream. The flavors change daily (check their Instagram).

💰 9.00 zł / portion (2026 Price)
📝 More time? Check these out:
  • Centennial Hall: UNESCO World Heritage Site (huge!).
  • Aula Leopoldina: Stunning Baroque ceremonial hall at the University.
  • Hydropolis: A museum dedicated to water/science.
  • Piwnica Świdnicka: One of the oldest restaurants in Europe (in the Town Hall basement).
🚌 Travel Tips
Getting Around: The city is walkable, but for spots further out (like the Korean BBQ!), the trams and buses are excellent. I highly recommend downloading the Jakdojade app to check schedules and buy tickets directly on your phone. It’s a lifesaver in Poland.
