Day Trip from Salzburg: Königssee, Mount Jenner & The Secret Combo Ticket

How to visit the German Alps from Salzburg in winter. Includes a crucial money-saving tip about the Jennerbahn Combo Ticket that I missed!

Imagine this: Stunning views over Lake Königssee and the Berchtesgaden Alps, all in one day. While these gems are in Germany, the smartest shortcut isn't from Munich (a 2.5-hour trek), but actually from Salzburg, Austria—just 50 minutes away!

Many tourists know about the famous lake, but fewer know about the "Secret Combo Ticket" that saves you money. I sadly missed it, but I'm writing this guide so you don't make the same mistake!

🚨 CRITICAL UPDATE 2026: The "Lake-Summit-Ticket"

The rules have changed! The money-saving combo is now called the "Lake-summit-ticket".
⚠️ Crucial Change: Unlike in the past, you can now ONLY book this with the Königssee Boat Company (at the lake).

  • ✅ The Correct Strategy: Go to the Boat Dock (Seelände) FIRST. Buy the "Lake-summit-ticket".
  • ⛵ The Rule: You must take the boat trip immediately upon purchase. You will receive a voucher for the Jennerbahn Cable Car (valid for 6 months), so you can hike up the mountain after your boat ride.
  • 📅 Valid Dates (2026): Jan 1 – June 30 & Sept 15 – Dec 31.
(NOT valid in peak summer July/August!)

⏱️ Timeline: A Winter Day (Nov 30, 2024)

Since it was winter, boat routes were limited (no stops at Salet/Obersee), so we had to plan carefully.

08:30 AM - Departure
Departed Salzburg Hbf. We took Bus 840 (Watzmann Express).
💰 Cost: €8.60 (Cash recommended!)
🚌 Bus Tip: Depart from Salzburg Hbf (Südtiroler Platz). Important: Bring Cash! Buying a "Tagesticket" (Day Ticket) from the driver is often cheaper than two singles.
10:50 AM - The Boat Ride
Boarded the boat at Königssee. The electric boat glides silently—make sure to listen for the famous trumpet echo demonstration!
  • 📸 Sit on the Right: On the way to St. Bartholomä, grab a seat on the right side for the best view of the church.
  • 🎺 The Echo: Prepare small coins to tip the trumpet player!
11:20 AM - St. Bartholomä
Arrived at the iconic church.
⚠️ Hiking Note: We originally planned to hike to the Ice Chapel, but trails were slippery and unclear. In winter, we decided to stay safe and just explore the church grounds.

15:00 PM - Jennerbahn Cable Car
Walked from the lake to the Cable Car station (approx 10 mins).
We bought the "Afternoon Ticket" (from 2 PM) for €34.00. The views from the top are unparalleled!
Mount Jenner
Cable Car
16:30 PM - Descent & Return
Last descent! We took Bus 840 back to Salzburg, then caught a train to our next stop: Bad Goisern (Upper Austria).
💰 Bus Cost: €7.50 (Cash recommended!)

We chose Bad Goisern as our base because it's a much more affordable and quieter alternative to staying directly in Hallstatt.

⚠️ Real-Talk: Setbacks & Tips

  • Winter Limitations: Boats do not go to Salet/Obersee in winter. No fresh milk kiosk for us! If you want the full hike, come in summer.
  • Weak Signal: My phone signal died deep in the forest. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before you go.
  • Connection Drama: On the way to Bad Goisern, we missed a connection due to a bus delay and arrived at 10:18 PM. Always check the ÖBB App for backup trains!

📌 Quick FAQ for 2026 Travelers

Q: Where do I store luggage?
🛅 We brought our luggage to Königssee. There are coin-operated lockers available at the Jennerbahn Valley Station (Talstation) and the Tourist Information center near the parking lot.

Q: Cable Car Opening Hours?
Usually 9:00 - 16:30. Check the official site as they often close for maintenance in Nov/Dec.
