Adventure of a Lifetime: A Winter Day Trip to Hallstatt & Lake Gosau (Upper Austria)
One Day in Upper Austria
From Hallstatt's Crowds to Gosau's Silence: A Winter Diary
If you are a nature lover, this region isn't just a destination—it’s a mood. We combined two of Austria's most iconic spots into a single winter day trip: Hallstatt, the UNESCO village that allegedly inspired Disney’s Frozen, and Lake Gosau (Gosausee), a pristine alpine lake that feels like a hidden paradise.
The Classic
Hallstatt
Yes, it’s famous. Yes, it’s crowded. But tucked between the Dachstein Alps and the dark waters of the lake, its charm is undeniable. The historic salt mines and alpine architecture make it feel like a living museum.
The Hidden Gem
Lake Gosau
If Hallstatt is the history, Gosau is the raw nature. Often described as "Bali meets the Alps," the water is crystal clear—even in winter. While accessible by public transport, it is easiest by car. It is a year-round destination, rewarding even in winter—as long as the weather holds.

⏱️ Timeline: A Day of Detours
Departed from our hotel in Bad Goisern. The morning air was crisp as we waited for Bus 541.
We chose the "Lahn" bus stop because it drops you right at the village entrance (unlike the train station which requires a ferry). The morning light hitting the church spire was magical.
Winter is real! My friend was underdressed, so we took Bus 544 back to Bad Goisern to grab warmer coats.
We originally planned to catch the REX 70 train, but it was cancelled. Adaptability is key! We headed back to the bus terminal and caught the Bus 542/541 combination towards Gosau instead.
Here is where the adventure truly began. We accidentally got off at Hintertal b.Gosau Zwieselalmbahn (the cable car station) instead of the lakefront stop.
⏳ The Reality: No bus for an hour—we had to walk.
✨ The Surprise: This 40-minute walk turned out to be the highlight of the day. Walking through the snowy valley with zero tourists and towering mountains ahead, my travel buddy Enyer and I captured our best photos of the trip. Sometimes, missing your stop leads to the best views.
We finally reached the lake. It was breathtaking. Since we arrived late in the afternoon, the light was soft, and the crowds were gone.
Too tired for dinner, we bought cake from the famous Konditorei Zauner in Bad Ischl before catching the train.
(A quick stop at the imperial town of Bad Ischl)
Boarded the R70 train to our next destination: Vienna.

Where we stayed: Bad Goisern
Instead of expensive Hallstatt, we chose Bad Goisern - Gasthof Zur Post . It’s the perfect transit hub:
- Connects Everywhere: Direct bus (541) to Hallstatt in 25 mins.
- Convenient: Walking distance to the train station (R70 line to Vienna).
- Budget Friendly: Much cheaper than the lakeside hotels.
- Luggage Storage: Just ask the owner, and they will direct you to a place to keep your bags.
